I received a CD with audio recordings from a court hearing and needed to create a audio CD that would play back in a standard CD player.
The audio recordings were .wav files recorded with For The Record and is playable through FTR Gold free player.
This player would not install using Wine 1.0.1 so I used a Virtual Box on WindowsXP, installed the program but when I tried to play the files Virtual Box didn’t like my sound card and wouldn’t play the audio.
On FTR’s website I found an addon that would save the audio to WMA format which played fine through Ubuntu.
Job done.
OK, so I needed to add a file to the repository for Google desktop in the /etc/apt/something thing directory and it wouldn’t let me cause it was owned by root.
Simple solution was to chown -R to me.
Bad idea.
After that I couldn’t do anything that required the system password.
To fix it I had to reboot into recovery mode and type…
chown -R root:root /etc
roboot
everything is back to normal
YAY!
OK, I am having serious problems with this Ubuntu switch.
First of all I am getting this stupid “starting Ubuntu in Low Graphics Mode” because it can not find a config file or something or other. I have to load the GUI in low mode and start the nVidia XServer so I can get the error message and command to put in the terminal. Once that is done I have to restart and it works fine… until my next restart. Then it is back to low graphics mode! GRRRRRRRR!
GIMP is driving me completely NVTS!
OK, so I have been using PhotoShop now for 20+ years and switching to a different program may not be as easy as I hoped. But for christ sakes when I ask to scale a layer I don’t mean to make a copy of that layer, scale it (with percentages and not an easy click and drag box, that, by the way, gives you the option of maintaining its aspect ratio) keep the old layer but removing all the colors and making my new scaled layer some funky sudo layer that can’t be moved or modified.
I have learned to accept that my navigator pane is gone but please if you want me to use the + and – keys, make them work all the damned time. For some reason or an other sometimes I zoom sometimes I don’t. ok ok, so I found the navigation pane. And… What’s up with 4 separate windows????!!!!!
Oh, here’s a novel idea how about adding some simple shapes or a texturizer or a 3d extruder ohh ohh I want a outter glow effect too! I have a new client and needed to make a couple design samples, I got 1 1/4th done in 4 hours where in Photoshop I could have done it in about an hour.
OK, how about if I just beg Adobe to port Photoshop to linux cause GIMP just isn’t getting it!
This post was made using a Panel Applet from Ubuntu. If this works there is a good possibility that I will be adding more posts to my Blog.
OK, so I’ve finally got sick and tired of reinstalling Windows due to bug infestations and have switched to Ubuntu!
Everything, except for 2 small issues, seems to be running swell including World of Warcraft!
To get World Of Warcraft to run on Ubuntu I first had to install the Wine package from the Synaptic Package Manager. This is an application which allows Ubuntu (and other Linux Distros) to execute programs written for Microsoft Windows.
Next I placed CD1 into my cd drive and opened the file browser, right clicked installer.exe and chose to open with Wine Windows Program Loader. from there it installed normally, asking for each CD as it needed it and auto detected when I changed CDs. I did this for each expansion.
The next step I had to add this line to my Config.cfg located inside my WoW/WTF/ folder.
SET gxAPI “OpenGL”
Thats it all done.
So far the only 2 things I have found that are not easily run in Ubuntu is Ventrilo and family Tree Maker which I have found work arounds for.
With Ventrilo I installed it using Wine the same way I did with WoW. the only issue is that sometimes my press to talk key gets buggy and doesn’t want to work. I am sure there is a work around for this as well but personally I find that this isn’t much of a problem cause it keeps my from yelling at some idiot who just wiped the raid cause he refuses to listen to directions. So now I just keep my mouth shut and listen to what everyone else is complaining about.
As for Family Tree Maker I have found that it doesn’t work in Wine. So for this one I just created and Virtual Windows box with VirtualBox OSE and installed it from there. Thsi is kinda a pain in the behind but at least it works. It’s a shame I am forced to continue with this product because I do like GRAMPS, but with well over 1000 photos and source links it would take way too long to convert my Family Tree Maker database over to GRAMPS. FTM will export to GEDCOM 5.5 but it doesn’t include the image or source file links.
