OK, so I’ve finally got sick and tired of reinstalling Windows due to bug infestations and have switched to Ubuntu!
Everything, except for 2 small issues, seems to be running swell including World of Warcraft!
To get World Of Warcraft to run on Ubuntu I first had to install the Wine package from the Synaptic Package Manager. This is an application which allows Ubuntu (and other Linux Distros) to execute programs written for Microsoft Windows.
Next I placed CD1 into my cd drive and opened the file browser, right clicked installer.exe and chose to open with Wine Windows Program Loader. from there it installed normally, asking for each CD as it needed it and auto detected when I changed CDs. I did this for each expansion.
The next step I had to add this line to my Config.cfg located inside my WoW/WTF/ folder.
SET gxAPI “OpenGL”
Thats it all done.
So far the only 2 things I have found that are not easily run in Ubuntu is Ventrilo and family Tree Maker which I have found work arounds for.
With Ventrilo I installed it using Wine the same way I did with WoW. the only issue is that sometimes my press to talk key gets buggy and doesn’t want to work. I am sure there is a work around for this as well but personally I find that this isn’t much of a problem cause it keeps my from yelling at some idiot who just wiped the raid cause he refuses to listen to directions. So now I just keep my mouth shut and listen to what everyone else is complaining about.
As for Family Tree Maker I have found that it doesn’t work in Wine. So for this one I just created and Virtual Windows box with VirtualBox OSE and installed it from there. Thsi is kinda a pain in the behind but at least it works. It’s a shame I am forced to continue with this product because I do like GRAMPS, but with well over 1000 photos and source links it would take way too long to convert my Family Tree Maker database over to GRAMPS. FTM will export to GEDCOM 5.5 but it doesn’t include the image or source file links.

Just a quick comment on these issues.
First of all I am still running Ubuntu and love it!
Second, I have stopped using Family Tree Maker and switched to GRAMPS. It took me well over a month to figure out how to get all my pictures imported with as little work as possible. I figured out that I could write a CSV, edit it with Geany and OOo spreadsheet to get all the formatting correct. Then do a search and replace in Geany on my exported GEDCOM for my image files, then import it into GRAMPS.
Once that was done I had to spend a bit of time going through each record and make sure the images showed up. If you need to switch, let me know and i can help or send me your data files and I can do it for you.
Finally, I fixed the Ventrilo problem by making everyone switch to Mumble. lol Since the Author will not give us a Linux port, I figured it was because he was doing things that he didn’t want to show in the source code and convinced everyone that he was writing bad code that could crash their computers or get their accounts hacked
